Last and Final Blog Post

I’d like to dedicate this final blog post to showing my gratitude for having the chance to be apart of this class. I remember when signing up for creative writing and seeing all sections fill up before my eyes, I was losing hope. After emailing prof. Bielecki asking for a special permissions number my hope was returned after hearing that there will be room for me come fall!

When first entering the classroom I had absolutely no idea what I was in store for. In all honesty I assumed it would be more like an expos class where we write 8 page long papers about not so interesting topics to say the least. When I recieved the syllabus I was stunned and could hardly believe my eyes. We were going to be working on blogs all semester long! No lengthy papers but instead blog posts on interesting and inspiring topics! It was a dream come true.

This class has taught me so much in the past 3 months and I can’t be more grateful. I was always interested in using iMovie so the first project allowed me to explore the program at a slow pace and eventually it became second nature to me. I now use iMovie whenever I can when creating projects for other classes and sometimes just for fun. Audacity was another useful program that I’m glad to have encountered seeing that it is an extremely helpful tool when creating podcasts – something I’ve also wanted to do in the past.

The last project, the blog final, as you can probably already tell from my previous posts, was something I was looking forward to the most. Even though I experienced some technical difficulties, I was guided step by step how to fix the problem and now i’m hoping for the best. The staff, as well as prof. Bielecki at the writing center are such a talented group of people and I just want to personally thank them for everything they’ve done.

I believe my writing skills have significantly increased over the past few months and I developed a writing style that I believe suits me well. Besides that, I got to meet all of you… you wonderful and talented bunch of peers who I can sadly say I will genuinely miss. I think our class was extremely productive and we worked well together. The atmosphere was always so pleasent and I cant thank all of you enough for that. It’s always such a bummer to have to roll out of bed to go to a class where no one is interested and no one cares.

I think we all did a great job this semester and I look forward to reading all of your final blogs! I hope we can all stay in touch.

Have a good rest of your semester everyone and good luck on final exams!

Namaste,

“Disabled” Mannequins

I found a huffington post article a few days ago (link below) that included this video. It’s safe to say that this was probably one of the most inspiring and genuinely nice thing i’ve seen on the internet in months. How many times do you walk into and out of the mall wishing that you looked just a little more like the mannequins? A little bit thinner, a tiny big taller, and just a tad richer.

This video and article shows the work of one organization that created a series of mannequins based on the looks of disabled individuals. People with deformities were given the chance to see their unique bodies in the form of a mannequin wearing stylish clothing. These mannequins were then put in store windows and you watch as passerby’s study them in awe.

It’s extremely comforting seeing that not all clothing organizations are focused on bodily perfection that the media exploits on a day to day basis. After coming across this it has given me the chance to see just how extraordinary a small adjustment can be in helping the lives of others. The smiles and stunned looks on the faces of these individuals gives hope to a brighter future where a perfect size and shape are no longer determined by harsh criteria.

Black Friday vs. Cyber Monday

I don’t know about anyone else but I certainly had no intentions of dragging my 400 lb body stuffed with turkey to the mall on Thursday night after Thanksgiving dinner.

I think I went black friday shopping once. It was with my mom a few years back. We got up at 6 a.m. and went to the mall for about 6 hours and out of those 6 hours we stood in lines for 5 1/2. It was disgustingly boring.

Since then i’ve jumped on board the cyber monday train, which in my honest opinion is also a bunch of b.s. But to be fair, it’s b.s. that can be performed while sitting in your favorite chair while wearing your most comfy pair of sweatpants. So automatically it wins. *Toot Toot!* All aboard!

I’m pretty sure I spent more then I made in 3 months on the Internet yesterday, and as I normally would be feeling very ashamed of myself at this time, I’m actually proud to say that none of the items were for me.

I did all my Christmas shopping convieniently from my bed and avoided the probable possibility of being trampled by a stampede of angry mothers.

Did anyone else see that video? For those of you who didnt… Check it out, heres the link:

Anyways, that video really weirds me out just watching it. I don’t really understand how people don’t realize that the prices are just jacked up before black friday and the “deals” you think you’re getting are pretty much normal prices.

I don’t know. Maybe I’m wrong. But I don’t think ANYTHING is worth trampling a pregnant woman in Kmart.

I also dont think anything is worth seeing a woman pick her weave up off the floor after it being ripped off her head and then placing it back causually if nothing had happened. Now THAT is just wrong.

Either way A LOT of money has been spent in stores and online in the past few days and part  of me can’t help but think if its all really worth it… Spending loads of cash on things you or your family members and friends probably don’t need. The worst part is that it’s right after Thanksgiving, and also just a month before Christmas. When everyone should be thankful and happy for wha they have…kinda weird if you think about it…

Thats all I really have to say about the topic.. leave sum ~luv~ and share what you think! B-Friday or C-Monday?

Final Project Idea

So i’ve been working on my final project for the past few days. Mostly gathering a bunch of pictures, videos, and quotes that I can use to make the wordpress I created come alive. I think it’s easier to collect all the data and information you wish you post to your wordpress and keep it all in a folder until your ready to organize it onto your page. I found myself saving files after files and realizing that if I posted things to my wordpress as I found them, it wold make no sense, and have no rhyme or reason.

I’m really interested to see everyones final blogs because I think this is the assignment everyone has been looking forward to the most. I know I am just beacuse I was getting tired of teaching myself how to use new programs for 3 hours to create something that should have only taken 5 minutes. WordPress is more in my comfort zone. I think every since myspace, creating any time of website has become second nature to many of us, so for that I am eternally thankful.

Has anyone else been having trouble creating the layout, colors, background etc. the way you want it? I’ve almost upgraded to premium 3 times just because of how frustrated I am whenever I choose an awesome background and layout and realize I have to pay for it.

I’m about to start filtering in all my information that i’ve gathered to put on the site thus far and organizing it into an easy-to-understand guide type format. I do need some opionions though… Do you guys think I should start with a summary of my own thoughts about my final project, or should I start out with the video that really got my gears grinding about the topic that im researching?

Let me know 🙂

Thanksgiving Break

So after all the responses on my “Thanksgiving Break, A Time To Reconnect” post, I got pretty excited to see how all of your Thanksgivings went and what happened with the whole “boycott technology” deal.

I’m saddened to say that although I was the one to suggest this little experiement, I completely and utterly failed at this test to break bad habbits on holidays.

I didnt realize that I had forgotten to put my phone away for the entire day until a couple days had passed. It was a tad embarassing but I quickly snapped back to reality and remembered how impossible Thanksgiving would have been for me without my phone.

I woke up late. The sound of my mother calling my cell phone over and over as I was peacefully dreaming in my apartment bedroom startled me from my slumber. I slammed my phone down thinking it was my alarm but the letters M-O-M on the brightly lit screen screamed otherwise.

Apprehensive to answer, I picked up after a few rings and prenteded to sound as if I had been awake and rushing around to get ready for the past 3 hours.

“Where are you?!”

“Baking”

“Baking?”

“Uh yeah.. i’m baking.. blueberry pie!” (I was not, nor did I have any intentions to bake a blueberry pie. Why did I say that, you ask? I have absolutely no inkling as to why I said it)

“Well get your ass over to Aunt Judy’s house now because were gunna be eating soon”

*Click*

Greaaaaaat! I just woke up. I looked like a seal. I had no time to do anything but brush my hair, teeth, and throw on the outfit I picked out the night before. THANK GOD I picked out something the night before.

I rushed out of my apartment nearly forgetting to lock the door behind me, remembering that I had just told my mom I was baking a blueberry pie. (?????) (side note: I don’t even like blueberries)

I got to my aunts house, surprisingly fast, and no one was eating yet.

Mom asked where the pie was and I said it came out terrible so I threw it away.

She definitely didnt believe a word out of my mouth. Oh well. It’s Thanksgiving, and you can’t fight on Thanksgiving.

Anyways, dinner commences and we all dig in. To my surprise, no one took out their cell phone during the meal. That was pretty cool.

After, we’re waiting for dessert to be served and like every other occasion at my aunts house, we all wind up messing with the stero system that’s built in around the entire house.

The cool part is that it can be controlled from your own cell phone as long as you have the wifi password.

The not so cool part is that I used my cell phone non stop for about an hour.

See.. once you start using your phone for one thing, it automatically drags you to all the apps that you can’t resist, espcially on holidays like thanksgiving where everyone and their grandma is uploading pictures of their turkey, mashed p’taters, and an uncle who’s passed out on the rug in front of the ginormous football filled TV.

Then theres people like your brother and your dad who are on their phone keeping up with all the scores of the different football games even though 4 seperate TVs in the house are playing 4 different games. (But hey, its necessary)

Then, finallly, came a moment of techno-free-clarity. Board games!

Pictionary, boulderdash, apples to apples, taboo YES!

Literally my all time favorite past time when hanging out with my family. I never laugh as hard as i do when playing boulderdash and it’s my turn to read everyones made up answers. I can never keep a straight face.. or a secret. And everyone hates when its my turn to be the announcer cause I always give it away… Oh well. Still hilarious.

But then the time comes when everyone becomes ~bored~ of the ~board games~ and cell phone lights are seen from under the table and quickly everyone is drawn back into the world of social media and all the people who is everyone BUT the people your with are now suddenly more important.

Sad..

Either way I had a fantastic Thanksgiving, and thanks to technology I was able to actually WAKE UP on time to have a fantastic Thanksgiving… even though it was technology that kept me up late the night before.. Ugh its like a never ending cycle. One minute its good, the next evil…

Technology = Sour Patch kids?

Alrighty this post has gone on long enough. I hope all your Thanksgiving Breaks were wonderful and I’m excited for our last class on Thursday. Hopefully there will be some yum yums!

Thanksgiving Break, A time To Reconnect

Thanksgiving break is in a week I believe.

I say, let’s all take this oppertunity to set aside our electronics and digital lives for a few days, and really genuinely connect with those family members and friends that surround us.

It’s been a while since I can say that I’ve been to family holiday gatherings without my phone and social medias. The last Christmas or Thanksgiving that I participated in family events without the use of electronics was 2005, fifth grade. This was before I had a Myspace, a Cell phone, and AIM.  This was the last Christmas that I spent genuine and focused energy on real people, and the events going on around me in real time. I forget what that even feels like!

I say, this holiday, we all go home and whether its for a day or the entire week, set aside your phones, don’t interact over the computer, and be with the people who really matter to you.

Take this time to show your parents and grandparents the young adult that you’ve blossmed into. Talk about your classes, what your learning, what your writing about, new friends you’ve made, clubs you’ve joined, jobs you’ve become involved in.

Also, take this time to look around at all of those who are consumed by their digital world. See how many conversations may diminish because of the interruptions of texts and notifications. Look around at time wasted by those consumed in their social networks. Try and take notice to the amount of time people spend faking experiences just so they can upload it to instagram.

Seriously, I’d really love to hear some of your experiences over Thanksgiving break as a blog post in 2 weeks. It might change the way you look at things.
